Human movement can be considered in terms of
quantity and
quality. Quantity refers to how much or how long the body can
move, and for sports performance thoughts of power, endurance and strength
come to mind. This quantity element of sports performance often takes
priority for most athletes and during training they struggle and grind and
sweat to get greater performance from their bodies.
Quality of movement refers to the ease with which the movement is performed - the grace of the movement. We know that high quality of movement produces better execution or greater skill. Erroneously, most athletes do not provide enough attention to the quality of their movements and continue to bludgeon their way through training. Quantity and quality are not separate elements of sports performance. Indeed, the interrelationship between quality and quantity of movement makes the value of quality more obvious. Quality creates an efficiency of movement, meaning the athlete can execute the movement again and again and again. This consistency of performance is the single most important element that separates the elite athlete from the amateur.
