At Work

You can take some simple steps to reduce the chance of illness or injury at work. Report problems early so that something can be done to help you or to change the work process. Warm up before you start work and do simple stretches during the day. Change your posture often, alternating between sitting and standing if possible. Avoid prolonged bending of your neck and back. Lift with care, wherever possible use trolleys or other aids to lift and carry heavy or bulky items. Store loads at waist height if you need to move them regularly. Maintain good general fitness and remember that lifestyle and leisure activities are important to your wellbeing at work. Follow safe work practices as these are designed to protect you and prevent injuries.

The type of work you do may put extra strain on your body, causing discomfort and tiredness in your back, neck and shoulders. Take particular care if your work involves any of the following risk factors:

  • sitting or standing all day
  • repetitive production work
  • heavy lifting
  • bending and twisting
  • working in awkward positions

Adjusting Your Workstation

  1. Position the screen at arm's length, slightly below eye level and directly in front of you.
  2. Set the document holder close to screen, at the same distance from your eyes.
  3. Adjust your seat's back rest to support the curve of your lower back.
  4. Keep your feet flat on floor, or use a footrest.
  5. Keep your hips, knees and elbows at a comfortable angle, close to 90°.
  6. To maintain comfort, do regular stretches, vary your tasks and shift positions regularly.
